SSD sizes and connections explained
Full technical description

The Samsung 870 QVO 2000GB (2TB) is a second-generation consumer SATA SSD built upon Samsung’s proprietary MKX controller, a hardware platform shared with the higher-end 870 EVO. The drive utilizes high-density Samsung V-NAND 4-bit MLC (QLC) flash memory, which allows for increased capacity per die but inherently introduces higher latency compared to TLC alternatives. To mitigate the slower native write speeds of QLC, the architecture incorporates a discrete 2GB LPDDR4 DRAM cache for mapping tables and employs a large dynamic SLC cache (Intelligent TurboWrite) to maintain performance during burst workloads. Technical analysis reveals a distinct performance dichotomy dependent on the Intelligent TurboWrite buffer. For the 2TB model, this pseudo-SLC cache spans up to 78GB; however, once a continuous write operation exceeds this capacity, the drive exposes the native QLC NAND speed. In this saturated state, write throughput can degrade to approximately 160 MB/s, which is lower than many mechanical hard drives. Consequently, this drive is technically characterized as a read-intensive storage solution, ideally suited for static game libraries or media archival rather than write-heavy content creation workflows.

Key Specifications

  • Interface: SATA III (6 Gb/s)
  • Form Factor: 2.5-inch (7mm)
  • Controller: Samsung MKX (Metis)
  • NAND Flash: Samsung V-NAND 4-bit MLC (QLC)
  • DRAM Cache: 2GB LPDDR4
  • Sequential Read/Write: Up to 560 MB/s / 530 MB/s
  • Endurance: 720 TBW (Total Bytes Written)
  • Encryption: AES 256-bit Full Disk Encryption, TCG Opal 2.0, IEEE 1667 support

Hardware Alternatives

  • Samsung 870 EVO 2000GB: The direct internal alternative. It utilizes the same MKX controller but pairs it with 3-bit MLC (TLC) NAND. The EVO offers superior sustained write performance and higher endurance ratings, addressing the technical limitations of the QVO's QLC flash.
  • Crucial BX500 2000GB: A common market alternative in the entry-level SATA segment. Unlike the QVO, the BX500 is typically a DRAM-less design using TLC NAND, trading the benefits of a dedicated DRAM cache for the durability benefits of TLC flash.
  • SanDisk Ultra 3D 2000GB / WD Blue 3D: These drives serve as the primary performance competitors in the SATA 2.5" form factor. They utilize 3D TLC NAND with a DRAM cache, generally offering a more consistent write performance profile during large file transfers than the QLC-based 870 QVO.
