The Samsung 980 PRO 500GB is a fully vertically integrated PCIe 4.0 drive using Samsung’s in-house Elpis controller (S4LV003) built on an 8nm process. The 500GB variant pairs that controller with Samsung’s 6th Generation (V6) 128-layer 3D TLC V-NAND and includes 512MB of LPDDR4 DRAM for address mapping. This generation moved the PRO series from 2-bit MLC to 3-bit TLC NAND, relying on TurboWrite SLC caching to maintain high burst throughput. Early firmware revisions were associated with reports of media integrity errors and premature health degradation, so updating firmware via Samsung Magician upon installation is important. The Elpis controller runs thermally hot under sustained loads; the controller has a nickel coating for heat dissipation, but active airflow or a dedicated heatsink is recommended to avoid thermal throttling, especially in confined spaces like console expansion slots.
