Full technical description
The HP FX700 1000GB is a DRAM-less NVMe drive built around the Maxio MAP1602 controller paired with YMTC 232-layer 3D TLC NAND. It uses Host Memory Buffer (HMB) to offset the lack of onboard DRAM, letting the drive access a portion of system RAM for address mapping. The design targets high throughput on the PCIe 4.0 interface while keeping a lower power envelope thanks in part to the controller's 12nm process node. The drive manages thermal output with a thin graphene-coated thermal pad and a single-sided PCB layout, and it relies on a dynamic pseudo-SLC cache, so sustained write performance can degrade once that cache is exhausted during extended heavy transfers.
Key Specifications
- Interface: PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 (NVMe 2.0)
- Sequential Speeds: 7200 MB/s Read, 6200 MB/s Write
- Controller: Maxio MAP1602 (4-channel, ARM Cortex-R5)
- NAND Flash: YMTC 232-Layer 3D TLC (Xtacking 3.0)
- DRAM Cache: N/A (Supports HMB)
- Physical Layout: Single-sided M.2 2280
- Thermal Management: Graphene foam heat spreader
Hardware Alternatives
- Lexar NM790 1000GB: shares an almost identical bill of materials (Maxio MAP1602 + YMTC NAND); performance differences mainly come down to firmware tuning.
- Acer Predator GM7: shares the same Maxio MAP1602 and YMTC NAND pairing with negligible performance variation aside from firmware.
- Netac NV7000-t: hardware clone that uses the same Maxio controller and YMTC NAND, with differences largely in firmware.
- WD Black SN770 1000GB: architectural competitor that targets the same segment but uses a proprietary SanDisk controller rather than the Maxio solution.
